Your page title is more important than you think

Your page title determines what people see in Google and what AI assistants quote, and you can adjust it today.

Every page on your website has a title that you don't always see as a visitor, but it appears everywhere. It's the blue link in Google, the text people share on WhatsApp, and increasingly also what an AI assistant quotes when someone asks a question about your business. Many entrepreneurs leave this title to their website builder or to the system that set up the site. Then it might simply say the company name, or something like Home, or Welcome. That's a shame, because these few words are one of the few places where you can speak directly to Google and to AI systems about what a page is about. Why this matters Suppose you are a plumber in Zwolle and you have a page about drain unblocking. If the title of that page is simply called Services, Google has to guess what the page is about. If it says Drain unblocking Zwolle, that guesswork is not necessary. The same goes for an AI assistant helping someone with the question of who in Zwolle can fix a blocked drain. That assistant also reads the title, and uses it to determine whether your page is relevant to the question. A good title is therefore not a matter of sounding nice, but of clarity. What is on this page, who is it intended for, and where. Those are the three things that a title should ideally make clear. What you can do today Open your website and look at the tab in your browser above each page. That's where the title that Google and AI systems read appears. Go through your most important pages, such as the homepage, your services or products, and possibly a contact page, and ask yourself whether someone reading the title would immediately know what the page is about. A title like Company name tells nobody anything new. A title like Drain unblocking and gutter cleaning in Zwolle and surrounding area does. Try to keep the title short, somewhere between fifty and sixty characters, because longer titles are often cut off in search results. Adjusting these titles can usually be done via your website's management system, often under a setting called SEO title or page title. If you're not sure where that is, the person who maintains your site can usually arrange this for you in a couple of minutes. It's not a major change, but it is one that makes a difference in how well Google and AI assistants understand what you offer. And that understanding is exactly what matters if you want people to find you, whether they search themselves or ask an AI assistant.
