Why an AI assistant reads your site differently than Google

AI assistants like ChatGPT read your website differently than Google, and that has consequences for how your business is found.

You probably know it well: your website ranks well in Google, but when you ask ChatGPT about companies in your industry, you don't come up. That's no accident. It's because AI assistants look at websites differently than a search engine. Google works with a system of links and keywords. The more relevant pages that refer to you and the better your text matches a search query, the higher you rank. You may know this process as SEO. An AI assistant doesn't search for links, but for clear, factual information it can use to compose an answer. It reads your website as a source of knowledge, not as a result in a list. Is it clear on your site what you do, for whom, and where you are located? Then an AI assistant can use that. If that information is hidden in fancy sentences or only in a picture, the system often misses that information entirely. What this means for you It doesn't mean you have to overhaul your website. But it does mean that clear, simple texts become more important. An AI assistant has little use for persuasive language like 'the best in the region' or 'your partner for quality'. It does have use for a sentence like: we repair boilers in Utrecht and surroundings, available seven days a week. The same applies to practical information. Opening hours, contact details, services you offer, the service area in which you operate: an AI assistant wants to be able to find and quote these kinds of facts. If it's not there, or if it's hidden in a PDF that nobody opens, the system simply can't mention you. What you can do today Go to your own website and read the text on the homepage as if you know nothing about your business. Is it literally stated what you do, for whom, and where? Not in a slogan, but in an ordinary sentence. If not, then that's a good starting point. You don't have to get this perfect all at once. The point is that the core of your business can be clearly found in text, not just in a logo or a photo. That helps not only AI assistants, but also ordinary visitors who want to quickly know if they've come to the right place. The world of search is changing. More and more people ask a question to an assistant instead of a search engine. Your website doesn't need to be renewed for this, but it does need to be readable for a system that is looking for facts, not persuasiveness.
