What an AI assistant can tell about your company

AI assistants like ChatGPT read your website differently than Google does, and that has consequences for what they say about your company.

More and more people are no longer asking Google but an AI assistant where they can find a good plumber, accountant or furniture maker in their region. The assistant then gives an answer, sometimes with a few company names included. The question is: how does that name end up there, and is yours among them. The difference with Google is important to understand. Google actively searches the internet and shows you the most up-to-date results at the moment you search. An AI assistant works differently. It has collected text from websites at a certain point and learned from it. What was not clearly stated in text on your site, the assistant simply does not know. This means that a number of things that were already important with Google become even more important with AI assistants. Why ordinary text makes the difference If your website consists mainly of beautiful photos with a logo and little running text otherwise, an AI assistant has little to work with. A picture with the text 'we repair washing machines in Almere' in it is read by a human, but not by a system that analyzes text. That same sentence, simply typed on the page, will be taken into account. The same applies to practical information that you may take for granted. What services you exactly provide, in which area you work, whether you also serve private customers or only businesses, what your opening hours are. This kind of sentences may seem dull, but it is exactly the type of text that an AI assistant relies on to form a complete picture of your company. What you can check today Open your own website and read it as if you knew nothing about your company. Is there in ordinary sentences what you do, for whom, and where? Not just in a menu or as a single word, but in full sentences as you would also say it to a customer on the phone. A good test is the contact page and the 'about us' page. These are often the pages where companies invest the least time, while they provide a lot of support for an AI assistant. A few sentences about what you do, since when, and in which places you are active, are more valuable than you might think. It is not about tricks or using as many words as possible. It is about clarity. An AI assistant can only pass on what actually appears as text on your site. The more concrete and direct that text is, the better a system can understand your company and describe it correctly to someone who asks about it. At Theos Group we keep websites of entrepreneurs up to date and ensure that the text on your site is readable for both Google and AI assistants. If you want to know how your own site stands in that regard, we would be happy to take a look at it with you.
